Kalico rocks out at the AAFGF American advertising awards

This past weekend we celebrated the rockin’ talents of the advertising and design industry in the Greater Frederick region at the AAF-GF’s American Advertising Awards (formerly known as the ADDYs). With a rock theme complete with live entertainment performing the likes of Twisted Sister, Guns n Roses, and Van Halen (not to mention event collateral created by us—BAM!), needless to say, we had a BLAST!

Inspirations from the power conference

Last week, I attended The Power Conference, a 1-day conference dedicated to women in business. Produced by the Women Business Consortium (made up of groups from around the Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia region), the conference was a wonderful event filled with a variety of workshops, roundtables, presentations and networking opportunities. Here is a brief summary of inspirational tidbits gathered from the conference:

Frogs and ships (daily action planning content)

What do frogs and ships have in common with each other (besides water)? Well, they’re both part of daily action components of The Manifest Method, a goal-setting and goal-achieving strategy developed by Angela Jia Kim of Savor the Success. And they are the two components that I’ve found most helpful in creating a detailed, attainable (not to mention successful) to-do list!

What does a web designer do?

Freelance web designers return a full range of services, depending on their skills and preferences.

Design Theory and Visual Design

Composition. You need to understand how to lay out websites with organized information using a column grid, vertical rhythm and module, and be able to adapt the design to different screen sizes – create a responsive design.

User Experience (UX)

User experience (UX) design is the science and art of creating products (or websites) that give users the best experience.

Web design focused on conversions

Companies and clients won’t shell out thousands of dollars for a new site just because it’s beautiful. They need top-notch design to deliver business results – in fact, 48% of people indicated that website design is the #1 factor in determining business credibility.
